I was born to be a gardener

On any country plot, you can create a real garden and turn ordinary hectares into a "work of art," even without having large means to pay for the services of landscape designers. In anticipation of the summer's approach, we figure out how to create a "Versailles branch" at our summer cottage.

However, "Versailles" is not appropriate on every plot: the main rule that any landscape architect will tell you is that the components of the garden should harmoniously combine with each other. On a plot with a wooden house, "ancient" sculptures of ancient Greek gods or elegant gazebos with classical columns will look quite strange.

So the first thing to do is to determine the style of the site and try to stick to it. Moreover, it is not necessary to understand the styles in detail. According to Julia Belukova, the director of the Blackwood department of suburban real estate, there are two "global" landscape styles - symmetrical and asymmetrical. "Those who love clarity and order will rather prefer the first option - in the spirit of a strict French garden. But such a style is more suitable for monumental and majestic architecture. From our practice, most owners still prefer a fairly chaotic style of landscape, which looks more natural," she says.

Now, what is convenient, the minimalist style is quite popular. On large plots, for example, the main space can be occupied by a lawn, which is also easy to care for. You can add trees and shrubs to the lawn - and it's done. "Figurative crowns will look especially original. Also, try to choose plants that look attractive in different seasons. These can include any fruit trees on which berries remain almost all year round (for example, rowan, viburnum, hawthorn, crab apple)," shares Irina Sheydyakova, the head of the landscape design department of the Villagio Estate company.

Paths

If the plot is organized from scratch, then after choosing a style, the second extremely important stage follows. The territory must be divided into zones: "Decide where you want to place the summer house, where to take sunbaths, where to have breakfast overlooking the garden, and where to leave space for flower beds, lawn, or vegetable garden. Then you can start planning the system of paths that connect these zones," explains Olga Duplikhina, a landscape architect at Archkon Bureau. Moreover, it is better to lay permanent paths later than when all functional elements of the plot are created - along "trodden" paths.

Paths can be very different - from banal asphalt to "living" ones. "For their creation, you can use literally any building material - remnants of decking, stone, wood, brick, etc.," says Maria Ivanova, the acting Commercial Director of GC "Sapsan," the head of "D45 / Design Laboratory."

Paths made of marble chips or granite screenings look good, notes Olga Duplikhina. Moreover, from these materials, you can even update existing paths, make them more interesting, marking new boundaries with a border, tiles. It is easy to change the shape of the paths, complementing it with new garden tiles or garden parquet.

Ecological wooden paths also fit well into the "rustic" style, for example, made from the remains of logs left after the construction of the house. "Round logs with a thickness of 10-15 centimeters are treated with a protective compound and installed in a chess order in pairs. Another option is to bury the halved logs with the round side down and the flat side up," tells Evgeny Klets, the sales director of Vector Investments LLC.

It is also possible to create "living" paths. "When laying tiles, the inter-tile seams should be sown with lawn grass or any other plants resistant to trampling," says Yulia Grosheva, the deputy director of the suburban real estate department of Kalinka Group.

Pergolas

Pergolas are also a very important element of a garden. They not only decorate and create mood, but also provide a place for pleasant pastime. In addition to styles, pergolas differ in their functional purpose. For example, a pergola can be made in the depth of the garden for reading. "In general, a pergola should correspond to interests or needs, bring joy," believes Olga Duplikhina.

Pergolas are especially pleasing on hot days. According to Grosheva, a beautiful summer pergola without special financial investments can be made from plants. For this, varieties of dwarf, weeping, low-growing plants are planted along the borders of the chosen shape. Over time, their crown forms a "canopy" - wooden or metal frames can be used to support it. "Climbing roses or wild grapes look very effective as roofs or walls," the expert notes.
Pergolas that are organized around a tree or "fit into" several plantings also look unusual, says Klets.

Benches and Sewing Machines

Another very important element of a country plot is benches. Of course, not everyone is able to make them by themselves - it is easier for most gardeners to buy them. But with a strong desire, benches can be made by yourself. "For example, you can make them from logs of similar diameter. You can put a polished and varnished board on top, but it will be more spectacular to align the surfaces of the logs to one height and cover the cuts with varnish," advises Olga Duplikhina.

You can show your individuality when using less standard elements of landscape design. For example, different figurines and sculptures, unusual furniture, and handcrafted items.

Sculptures made of concrete are specifically sold for gardens and country houses in any garden center. However, such decor is stylistically quite peculiar. For fans of exclusivity, according to Grosheva, there are other options: "Pour concrete into old round lampshades and break them when the concrete sets. This way you will get decorative balls that can be used for almost any design purposes - decorate the entrance to a room, scatter them around the area, place them along paths, etc."

Another way to stand out is to "bring back to life" old things in a new way. Here, anything can be used - from rather banal car tires to grandmother's sewing machines. "Old bicycles, cart wheels, gramophones, jugs, or shoes," suggests Belukova.

Here Will Be a Pond!

Ponds, fountains, streams, and even rivers are also a great way to decorate a plot and give it individuality. One of the simplest ways to organize a "garden" pond is to use an ordinary bathtub or an old barrel, dug into the ground and filled with water.

A garden "river" can also be organized with minimal effort. "In a suitable place on the plot, it is necessary to dig a channel with a slight slope, and arrange small pits at the beginning and end of it. In the lower pit, place a circulation pump, and run a hose underground to the upper pit - this will create a "source". The channel can be covered with a dense film and laid with pebbles and stones. Using the same principle, you can organize a "waterfall" on an alpine slide," shares his experience Evgeny Klets.

To make improvised reservoirs look more natural, they can be decorated with appropriate aquatic plants. For example, hybrid water lilies, common or marsh marigolds, water hawthorn, reeds, bulrush, and others. All these plants give the pond a "Russian" appearance. But the pond can also be made more exotic. "You can create a 'mini-Miami' in the dacha. There are many options for such decoration. As usual, the main thing is the overall style and design. For example, you can create a tropical atmosphere by adding vertical greening - it will give you the feeling that you are somewhere on the seaside. Or organize a safari style, for which large cacti, agaves, succulents, planted in pots (preferably made of modern materials such as composite ceramics and polystone) are suitable," advises Christina Dikova, the director of FLORISTA.
