First Metro in Saudi Arabia: Riyadh Launches New Transportation Project
By the beginning of next year, the Riyadh Metro network comprising 6 lines with a total length of 176 km will be fully operational. In the first phase in December 2024, 3 lines were launched, and the full opening will take place on January 5, 2025. The network will be automated and will be able to transport up to 3.6 million passengers. This grand project is aimed at reducing transport loads and transitioning to more environmentally friendly modes of transportation.
The metro will be served by 183 trains with 448 cars from leading global manufacturers: Siemens (Germany), Bombardier (Canada), and Alstom (France). The stations have been constructed using 20% recycled materials, and the engineering solutions are aimed at reducing energy consumption and rational water use. The metro will be the backbone of Riyadh's transportation system and will connect key areas of the capital, providing residents with convenient and modern means of transportation.
The launch of the metro is part of the extensive Vision 2030 program aimed at modernizing the country and reducing dependence on oil. Riyadh, with a population of about 8 million, is becoming a lab for iconic initiatives. In addition to the metro, by 2030 the capital is planning to construct theme parks, modern stadiums, office towers for global companies, and new tourist attractions that embody the rich history of Saudi Arabia.
