Diriyah Art Futures: A Dialogue Between Art, Technology, and Cultural Heritage in Saudi Arabia
A new chapter in cultural development is unfolding in the Middle East. Regions once solely focused on preserving traditions are now creating spaces for contemporary art, digital practices, and international dialogue. Saudi Arabia is emerging as a leader in this movement, and the launch of Diriyah Art Futures (DAF) stands as one of the most striking examples of this transformation.
Located in the historic district of Diriyah, DAF is the region’s first institution entirely dedicated to digital and media art. The project is implemented under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and the Museums Commission of Saudi Arabia, as part of the national Vision 2030 program, which aims to develop culture as a strategic sector.
Diriyah Art Futures is conceived as a multifunctional space for artists, architects, digital engineers, and researchers. It provides not only exhibition opportunities but also facilities for technological experimentation, residencies, and education.
A key initiative of the institution is the Emerging New Media Artists Programme, a year-long fellowship offering young artists access to cutting-edge equipment, personalized curatorial guidance, and full production support. Simultaneously, the Mazra’ah Media Arts Residency serves as a platform for established media artists to develop unique projects in collaboration with global art institutions.
Designed by Schiattarella Associati, the DAF building blends regional architectural codes with a technological approach. Natural materials, passive cooling, and traditional construction techniques merge with advanced digital control systems and sustainable engineering solutions.
Diriyah Art Futures fulfills a crucial cultural mission—nurturing a new generation of artists, engaging local communities, promoting cultural diplomacy, and building a bridge between past and future. It serves as a catalyst for long-term intellectual and aesthetic transformation in the region.
For collectors, cultural investors, and developers, the emergence of such projects signals the growing value of creative infrastructure in the Middle East. It also confirms that cultural capital is becoming an integral part of territorial development.
